How many volts are in a battery pack?

Common battery packs are 72V, 60V, 48V, and 24V, all of which are made up of several 12V battery cells. The voltage of a battery pack is equal to the sum of the voltages of its individual batteries.

Do lithium ion batteries need to be equalized?

Lithium ion batteries are becoming increasingly popular and require a different equalization voltage than lead acid or nickel-cadmium batteries. Battery equalization voltages for lithium ion battery packs should be between 1.8 and 3 volts per cell in order to maintain performance.

What happens if a lithium battery is connected in series?

When individual lithium cells, each with slight manufacturing differences and unique characteristics, are linked together in series to achieve the desired output voltage for a system, imbalances in charge levels can occur during the battery's charge and discharge cycles.

What happens if a battery is not balancing?

Without balancing, some cells can become overcharged or discharged more than others. This imbalance can reduce the overall capacity of the battery since the battery management system (BMS) will stop charging if any cell reaches a critical maximum voltage, and stop discharging if any cell reaches critical depleted voltage.
