Abstract: This research presents an advanced smart solar street lighting system that integrates IoT technology for enhanced efficiency and sustainability. The system incorporates features such as solar energy harvesting, adaptive lighting control, and real-time monitoring, leveraging the ESP32 microcontroller and sensors.

How are street lights controlled?

Sensors are utilised to regulate individual street lights within a system by detecting the level of illuminance. Lighting systems are controlled by detecting the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Camera-based control strategies are employed to govern lighting systems.

How to control the smart public lighting system?

To control the smart public lighting system, the Wemos D1 R2 series board was used for processing based on the signals obtained from the light intensity sensor, motion sensor, and magnetic float switch, in cooperation with the active low relays and the percentage conversion module (%PWM to analogue).

However, traditional street lighting systems often suffer from inefficiencies, such as excessive energy consumption, unnecessary illumination during low-traffic hours, and delayed maintenance responses to faults or failures.
