Do rooftop solar panels affect a building?

The use of rooftop solar panels increases the superimposed dead load (SDL) of the roofing system and can have varying impact on a building depending on what material is being used for the structural system.

Do rooftop PV panels affect thermal loads?

Shading effects would differ depending on the roof's thermal properties, climate, and PV system design. Especially in hot climates, rooftop PV panels could be used as the shading elements. Hence, when analyzing the performance of rooftop PV systems, the effects of PV panels on the building's thermal loads should be taken into account.

Do solar panels reduce heat absorbed by a cool roof?

In the absence of photovoltaic (PV) panels, the heat absorbed by a cool roof (characterized by high reflectivity) is reduced by 65.6% compared to a conventional roof (with low reflectivity). However, once PV panels are installed, the disparity in heat gain between roofs with varying reflectivity levels is narrowed to approximately 10%.
