Can pumped hydro storage based hybrid solar-wind power supply systems achieve high re penetration?

It has been globally acknowledged that energy storage will be a key element in the future for renewable energy (RE) systems. Recent studies about using energy storages for achieving high RE penetration have gained increased attention. This paper presents a detailed review on pumped hydro storage (PHS) based hybrid solar-wind power supply systems.

The use of pumped hydro-energy storage is essential in current electricity grids with a high share of renewable energy because it allows for the optimization of the use of generated energy and the possible reduction of excess energy discharges.

Can pumped storage be integrated with re systems?

Integration of PHS with RE systems: Although, pumped storage is in operation since a long time ago, as they were employed to store the excess thermal power plants energy (nuclear energy during off-peak hours). However, PHS employment with RE sources is challenging due to very low predictableness of timing, amount and duration of excess RE.
