What is a flow battery?

The concept of a flow battery is this: rather than storing energy as a chemical change on the electrodes of a cell or in some localised chemical change in an electrolyte layer, flow batteries store energy due to the chemical change of a pair of electrolytes. These are held externally to the cell and connected with a pair of pumps.

How much does a flow battery cost?

By 2030, the cost is expected to come down to between USD 108 and USD 576/kWh. Round-trip eficiencies for these particular flow batteries are expected to improve from between 60% and 85% in 2016 to between 67% and 95% by 2030, as a result of improved electrode, flow and membrane design.
